Why is Uganda called the Pearl of Africa? Who first named Uganda the Pearl of Africa?

The Slogan – Uganda – the Pearl of Africa was made famous by Winston Churchill in his 1908 Book entitled “My African Journey” about his trip to Uganda in 1907.

Winston Churchill was quite enthused about what he found in Uganda. He wrote, “For magnificence, for variety of form and color, for profusion of brilliant life – bird, insect, reptile, beast – for vast scale – Uganda is truly “the Pearl of Afrca”

Today many people attribute this tag-name “Pearl of Africa” to the early explorer Winston Churchill but the fact is that many other explorers and discoverers from the west (including Henry Morton Stanley, John Hanning Speke, Frederick John D. Lugard,  described the wonders of Uganda using ‘praising’ terms.

Actually the wonders of this country inspired also the earlier explorers that visited Uganda before Winston Churchill made his visit to Uganda.  They were stunned by Uganda’s beauty, her natural wonders and above all her hospitable welcoming people. With the introduction of modern travel means, thousands of tourists visit and fall in love with Uganda – the Pearl of Africa.

Some of the wonders to see here include Mountain Gorillas, chimpanzees, the source of the Nile, the Murchison Falls, the Rwenzori Mountains, the ‘Big Five’ wild animals (lions, buffaloes, elephants rhino and the leopard); all living in its 10 National Parks.
